Public Opinion Strongly In Favor of Friendly Relations

Yomiuri Shimbun of April 8, 2007 reports the results of an opinion poll of university students in both China and Japan. "Eighty-nine percent of the 1,020 respondents in Japan, and 91 percent of the 987 respondents in China thought Japan, China and the United States should bolster their respective ties to enhance peace and stability in Asia." However, roughly equal percentages of students in each of the countries described the current state of Sino-Japanese relations as "bad," so there is much work to be done. Moreover, about one-half of the respondents in each country had a negative impression of university students in the other country.
