In August 2006, the Department of International Relations at Australian National University will host a workshop on reconciliation between Japan and China. Preparatory to the organization of that workshop, we invite you to brainstorm the topic electronically through this blog. The purpose of this blog is to invite discussion and debate about the best ways to encourage reconciliation between China and Japan.

Energy Saving Link Planned between China and Japan
Daily Yomiuri Online, December 18, reports that ministers from Japan and China met in Beijing and agreed to establish a joint panel to assist China to receive energy-saving technology from Japan. "The Chinese government plans to improve energy efficiency by 20 percent in five years from 2006 to 2010, and has determined that learning Japan's advanced energy saving methods will help the country achieve that goal." One potential problem in the project is that Japanese high-technology companies may be concerned that Chinese companies might not respect their intellectual property rights. Presumably, the joint panel will have to work to deal with this problem.
